Experience the authentic side of Chania at Iguana Beach

Iguana Beach Chania Crete, is a sandy bay located in the area of Agioi Apostoli, just 3 km west of Old Town Chania. It’s part of a group of three small coves that form one of the most beautiful and family-friendly stretches of coastline in north-western Crete.

The beach is well known for its fine golden sand, shallow and clear waters, and calm atmosphere. In our opinion, it’s one of the best spots for swimming and snorkelling.

The seabed slopes gently, making it safe for children and beginner swimmers. Iguana has maintained a more local vibe, where you’ll see families from Chania setting up for the day, friends playing beach volleyball, and travellers enjoying cold frappes at the beachfront café.

Where is Iguana Beach located?

Iguana Beach is located in the municipality of Nea Kydonia, west of Chania. The beach is situated just off the main Chania–Platanias road, making it one of the easiest beaches to reach from the city.

The area of Agioi Apostoli is famous for its small coves, pine trees and walking trails. Iguana is one of the three main bays here, together with Golden Beach and Glaros Beach, all within walking distance of each other.

There are plenty of shaded picnic areas, walking paths, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the Cretan Sea. It’s perfect for families and ideal for spending a full day at the beach, either in the summer or winter months.

Thanks to its proximity to Chania, Iguana Beach is also a great base for exploring other parts of western Crete’s beaches, such as Balos Lagoon, Elafonissi, Seitan Limania or Falassarna.

How to get to Iguana Beach

Getting to Iguana Beach Chania is easy.

🚗 By car

From Chania city centre, it’s a quick 5- to 10-minute drive west along the main coastal road. There’s a free car park right behind the beach and additional roadside spaces nearby. However, parking fills up fast during peak hours, so arrive before 11 am if possible.

🚌 By bus

Local buses (number 21) run frequently from Chania’s main bus station to Agioi Apostoli, stopping just a few minutes’ walk from the beach. The fare is about €2 each way, and buses run every 20–30 minutes during summer.

🚶 On foot

If you’re staying in Chania’s Nea Chora area, you can actually walk along the scenic coastal path to Iguana Beach in about 45 minutes. The route passes several smaller bays and viewpoints, making it a pleasant walk early in the morning or before sunset.

Are there any amenities or activities at Iguana Beach?

Although the beach is small, Iguana Beach Crete has a full range of facilities that make it both comfortable and enjoyable.

🏖️ Food & Drinks

The beachfront café and food truck is a highlight. It’s the perfect place to grab a refreshing smoothie or a cocktail while watching the sunset. Nearby, you’ll also find restaurants and traditional tavernas in Agioi Apostoli serving fresh seafood and Cretan specialities.

🌊 Activities

You can enjoy snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters, or if you prefer a bit more adventure, paddleboards and kayaks are available to rent from nearby coves. In the evenings, locals often gather for friendly games of beach volleyball, creating a lively atmosphere. A perfect day trip from Chania

In the winter months, visiting the village of Agioi Apostoli is a great way to explore local life. Far from the summer crowds, this small seaside village is ideal for exploring local shops, cuisine, and enjoying a picnic at nearby Iguana Beach.

The coastal trails that connect Agioi Apostoli’s three small bays are ideal for peaceful strolls beneath pine trees, while local tavernas remain open year-round. It’s a great time to explore the coastline and try traditional meals outside of the big city.
