Seitan limania or Agiou Stefanou, the heavenly beach with turquoise water. Chania, Crete

Seitan Limania, also known as Agios Stefanos or Stefanou, is one of the most beautiful coves on the Akrotiri Peninsula. Located around 20 km northeast of Chania, this hidden area of Crete has become increasingly popular thanks to its wild, unspoilt beauty. What makes Seitan Limania so special are its crystal-clear turquoise waters, limestone cliffs, and narrow inlet.

Join us in this article as we explore Seitan Limania. We’ll share what you need to plan a visit to this must-see area. From how to get there to what to bring, we aim to help you prepare your perfect beach escape to Crete.

What makes Seitan Limania special

Seitan Limania stands out as one of Crete’s most striking natural spots. Tucked into the Akrotiri Peninsula, this narrow cove is flanked by steep limestone cliffs that form a zigzag inlet. Since this natural formation creates a protected strip of water with minimal waves, it’s the ideal beach for a tranquil swim. One of the most eye-catching features of Seitan Limania is the water itself. The sea is a beautiful shade of turquoise, with a sandy seabed. It is perfect for snorkelling.

The name “Seitan Limania” translates to “Devil’s Ports,” and comes from the time of Ottoman occupation. The locals named the area after its strong and unpredictable currents, which once made it difficult for boats to anchor safely. Today, while the waters are generally calm in the protected cove, the name still adds a sense of mystery to the beach.

It’s important to note that this is a natural, untouched area, meaning there are no organised services here. For example, there are no sunbeds, no beach bars, and no lifeguards.

How to get to Seitan Limania from Chania

Getting to Seitan Limania from Chania is part of the adventure! There are two main ways to reach this remote beach. By car, followed by a short hike, or by boat.

By Car and Footpath

The most common route is by car, which is about 20km from Chania via the village of Chordaki. From there, you’ll follow signs towards the small chapel of Agios Spyridon. The final stretch is a narrow, winding road that descends steeply towards the cliffside car park.

Warning: this section of the drive requires caution as there are no guardrails, and the turns are sharp. Parking is limited and located right on the edge of the cliff, so make sure you park correctly!

Once you’ve parked, you now begin your journey downhill. The footpath down to the beach takes about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on your pace. It’s a rocky, uneven trail with steep sections, so wearing proper footwear is highly recommended. Never wear flip-flops for this portion of the trip.

By Boat

Alternatively, you can get to Seitan Limania by sea. Boat trips are available from Chania’s Old Port and take around 25–40 minutes, depending on the vessel. This route has spectacular coastal views of the Akrotiri Peninsula and is ideal for those looking to avoid the steep hike down to the beach. You can also hire private boat tours, especially for groups or if you want to explore multiple beaches in a single day. Half-day charters usually last around 4–5 hours and range from €750 to €950, depending on the boat size and amenities. These tours usually include stops at other secluded coves like Katholiko and the famous Balos Lagoon.

Tips to enjoy the beach to the fullest

To make the most of your visit to Seitan Limania, timing and preparation are very important. This small cove can get crowded quickly in the summer, especially in July and August. Therefore, it’s best to arrive early, ideally before 10:00 a.m., to find parking and enjoy the beach in peace. Swimming in the calm, turquoise sea is a must, as is snorkelling! The visibility here is excellent, especially in the morning. If you enjoy photography, the cliffs above the cove give you stunning vantage points, especially at sunrise and sunset. If you prefer something more adventurous, some visitors also enjoy cliff jumping, but it’s essential to exercise caution: always check the water depth first, as conditions can vary depending on recent tides and weather.

Be very careful if you are walking down to the beach from the car park. It is very steep and rocky, with no protective railings. Once at the beach, remember that there are no lifeguards or medical services, so be cautious and stay alert.

What to bring with you and what to avoid

Since Seitan Limania is remote and with no amenities available, it’s important to come prepared. There are no shops, kiosks, or beach facilities, so everything you need should be brought with you.

What to Bring

  • Plenty of water and snacks: There are no food or drink vendors nearby, so bring enough to stay hydrated throughout your visit.
  • Sun protection: The sun can be intense, especially between late morning and mid-afternoon.
  • Beach essentials: A towel, beach mat or blanket, and a dry bag for valuables.
  • Optional snorkelling gear: The clear, calm water is ideal for spotting fish and exploring the underwater scenery.

What to Avoid

  • Leaving food unattended: Wild goats roam the area and will not hesitate to raid bags left open or unguarded.
  • Littering: There are no bins at the beach. Be sure to carry all rubbish out with you and follow a “leave no trace” approach.
  • Arriving late without planning: Parking is extremely limited, and the beach fills up fast, especially during peak season.
